Veronica Burke Award set up
[TITLE]

An Incorporation Award in recognition of Contributions to Breadmaking named in honour of Veronica Burke

The Veronica Burke Award was set up in memory of the co-founder of Bread Matters and Scotland the Bread, who died in April 2018.

The Edinburgh Bakers` Trust awards small grants to projects and enterprises in Scotland, primarily in Edinburgh and the Lothians. Of each year’s successful applicants, the one that the trustees feel has special merit will then receive The Veronica Burke Award.

Chair of The Edinburgh Bakers’ Trust, Wendy Barrie, said:
“Veronica was a very special person and the world is a poorer place without her so we wanted to set up something in her memory to honour her. Bread is a powerful word and sharing bread is a sign of community wellbeing but, as Veronica advocated, it must be Real Bread, crafted from high quality grains and other natural ingredients.”

Veronica was Founding Chair of Breadshare Community Supported Bakery, collaborating with Bread Matters, youth networks and businesses, bringing social inclusion and health equality to communities. Later she and Andrew would set up a further community benefit society, Scotland The Bread.

The Incorporation of Edinburgh Baxters (Bakers) and the ensuing Trust, welcomed the opportunity to set up an Incorporation Award in recognition of Contributions to Breadmaking and name it in her honour – The Veronica Burke Award, to be presented to someone who has shone that year.
